john kerry made a surprise visit to baghdad earlier today where he spoke to prime minister nuri al maliki. secretary kerry is now in amman, jordan, and so is chief foreign affairs correspondents andrea mitchell, traveling with the secretary of state. she joins us by phone now. andrea, what did secretary kerry accomplish with this trip to baghdad? >> reporter: well, it was a very tough trip and a tough message, because we went to baghdad, a quick visit. surprise, under tight security and secrecy, for obvious reasons, because ten years ar the war, there still are terror attacks. last week, when dozens were killed in baghdad. he was in a secure place in the embassy and then visiting prime minister maliki and the speaker of the parliament in iraq in their residences, but his message to mallski that the maliki government is permits iran to send weapons and fighters, overflight, loaded with weapons and fighters, to prop up assad in syria and that this is something that americans and the congress, that the administration, cannot understand or tolerate, and as kerry told us afterwards, it

as well. could this be obama helping to set up secretary of state john kerry for what you talk about is the larger issue of peace negotiations down the line? >> yes, and i believe secretary kerry is very committed to a middle east peace process. i think it's long overdue. and i think the president's got to give him the political cover that secretary kerry would need. and key is going to be the israeli public. and the relationship with president netanyahu. you know you what say candid or business-like in diplomacy, it means that it's not a perfect relationship. but, you know, a lot of leaders, they develop this relationship. a better relationship, over time, and i think that's what the president is doing. >> so as long as the business relationship can produce positive business results it's a good thing. let's talk about iran. the nuclear issue that's a top issue for president obama's agenda. on friday, defense secretary chuck hagel said there are these plans to beef up missiles after north korea said it was going to be trying to have its preemptive nuclear strike against the u.s. or l
both ways. enthusiastic for bush and enthusiastic for kerry. >> scott: fast forward to 2007 and 2008. senator barack obama runs for president and comes to san francisco to raise money. word was he did not want to be photographed with you. was that true? >> willie brown and myself were doing the fund-raisers for him. one at a restaurant. he had strong opinions. a lot of folks had strong opinions. >> scott: was he worried? >> everyone was worried. i had that brief moment where the new person and the rising star and i was going to go to boston during the convention and speak. all of a sudden, calling up and i said i get it. all these folks that were surrounding me, moved aside and to your point, that was more hurtful than the predictable position of schwarzenegger. >> scott: fast forward to 2008, supreme court says gay marriage is okay. you hold a press conference and said whether you like it or not, gay marriage is coming. would you have done that differently? >> of course. it wasn't my press conference. it was the city attorney's. frankly, i did not anticipate winning. i was stunned.
. secretary of state kerry has been involved. the fact is, of course, that the difference between israel and turkey benefitted neither country. and it was -- to some extent, it should have been resolved earlier, but the fact is it's done now and hopefully they will rebuild the good relationship that they had, which will be beneficial to both and to us in the region. >> you mentioned iran being a top of conversation, but at almost every stop, every discussion with a leader, the the president was riddled with questions about syria. syria kept coming up. the president made it clear the u.s. has provided a lot of humanitarian aid and will continue to do so, but also said, and i'm quoting loosely, assad will go. it's not an issue of if but when. how important is it for the president to sound so certain on that, especially while in the region? >> well, of course, as you know, there's turbulence throughout the region arising out of the situation in syria. just today the press reports that the prime resigned because of differences arising from the conflict in syria. it's a destabilizing influenc
